Recently in this election cycle, you have been hearing the word “Social Democracy” and several politicians have been identifying themselves as “Social Democrats.” The most well-known nationally is the newly elected mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani. In a city where the average monthly rent in Brooklyn is $3,000.00, Queens is $3,600.00, and Manhattan is between $4,200—$4,600.00, Mamdani’s message of affordability resonated throughout the city.
But when the word, “Social Democrat” is mentioned, those that attack it immediately associate it with the poison pill, “communism,” the death knell of American politics. But is this true? Is being a “social democrat,” synonymous with being a communist.
Well, let’s first define terms. What is Social Democracy, and what are its features. First, social democracy is a form of capitalism that accepts private ownership, market economies and believes capitalism can be made fair through strict rules, high taxes and labor laws. Its main goal is to reduce inequality and guarantee public goods such as universal healthcare, free education and robust social safety nets for the good of the entire society. Surprising to find that out isn’t it. But don’t believe me or Fox News, or whatever politician, celebrity or blogger you listen to or blindly trust, goggle it for yourself. There are several real-world nations that follow this model today. the Nordic countries of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Great Britain and several others, which are all “Social Democracies.” All are members of NATO and were formed to unite against the communist iron curtain raised by the Soviet Union across Eastern Europe shortly after 1945 at the end of the the Second World War.
So, then, why is it that whenever someone in America says they are a social democrat, they are labeled or called “communist.” And why is it that all Americans seem to believe it. And why is it that when the President of the United States or a member of the republican or democrat party says it, no one in the press says anything to correct them.
But let’s ask ourselves another question. Something more important to consider. Does the Bible affirm social democracy or being a social democrat, as correctly and accurately defined and described.
When Israel was established as a nation state; a Theocracy to be exact, God gave them an economic system that was profitable and fair. Their economy was principally agrarian. It was based upon land inheritance and allocation, planting and harvesting. It was seasonal and depended upon the laws of nature and divine intervention. And as such, God’s providence was integral to its sustenance and prosperity.
God gave Israel distinct guidelines to follow in the administration and governance of their economic, social and business practices that were chiefly outlined in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy with detailed specifications. I will refer to them in this presentation.
In Leviticus 19:9—10 NLT (repeated in 23:22) they were instructed 9—“When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. 10—It is the same with your grape crop—do not strip every last bunch of grapes from the vines, and do not pick up the grapes that fall to the ground. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the Lord your God.”
God’s system discouraged greed and picking more than the harvester could carry. Whatever they dropped was to be left for anyone who followed them, who was allowed to pick—up what fell to the ground. The process was called “gleaning.” And as the Bible says, the ‘poor’ and ‘foreigners’(immigrants) were allowed to follow them and pick—up their leftovers. It was not a handout or welfare but those that gleaned had to work in the fields to receive the goods that they harvested. Leviticus 23:22 instructed them to never reap the corners of their fields but leave them to be harvested by the poor and strangers(non-citizens). It was a system of sharing, liberality and generosity. It did not encourage idleness but industry.
There was no unfairness or exploitation. In Leviticus 25:35—38 NLT says, “If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and cannot support himself, support him as you would a foreigner or a temporary resident and allow him to live with you. Do not charge interest or make a profit at his expense. Instead, show your fear of God by letting him live with you as your relative. Remember, do not charge interest on money you lend him or make a profit on food you sell him. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan and to be your God.”
Misfortune and/or hardship of another person was never used as a means of exploitation or to take advantage of someone but rather was seen as an opportunity to give assistance. Unlike modern business institutions they were prohibited from charging interest to their fellow citizens when they made loans or extended credit to them when they were destitute or in need.
God never intended for generations to suffer financial deprivation from the poor economic decisions of one member of the family that may have lost the families entire inheritance. Hence Jubilee was instituted by God a system of economic redemption that returned all lost property, wealth and ownership back to the original family that it belonged to. Leviticus 25 explained how the process of redemption was to be implemented. This was done so that no family in Israel would be subjected to permanent generational poverty for the mistakes and poor judgment of their ancestors. Verses 23—28 says—“The land must never be sold on a permanent basis…With every purchase of land you must grant the seller the right to buy it back. If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and is forced to sell some family land, then a close relative should buy it back for him. He then has the right to redeem it from the one who bought it…The price of the land will be discounted according to the number of years until the next Year of Jubilee…But if the original owner cannot afford to buy back the land, it will remain with the new owner until the next Year of Jubilee. In the jubilee year, the land must be returned to the original owners so they can return to their family land.”
There was no such thing as land barons or slum lords that owned all the properties in Israel while others rented and were charged astronomical rents. God’s plan was economic fairness. God’s system was based on communal ownership, equity and shared wealth.
God gave instructions related to the fair treatment of others, how to handle business matters, fair labor relations and equal justice. He said in Leviticus 19:13–16 NLT 13—“Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. “Do not make your hired workers wait until the next day to receive their pay. 14—“Do not insult the deaf or cause the blind to stumble. You must fear your God; I am the Lord. 15—“Do not twist justice in legal matters by favoring the poor or being partial to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly. 16—“Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people. “Do not stand idly by when your neighbor’s life is threatened. I AM the LORD.”
And then in Deuteronomy 24:17—“You shall not pervert justice due the stranger or the fatherless, nor take a widow’s garment as a pledge.” 10—“When you lend your brother anything, you shall not go into his house to get his pledge. 11—You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring the pledge out to you. 12—And if the man is poor, you shall not keep his pledge overnight.”
Exodus 22:26–27 26—“If you ever take your neighbor’s garment as a pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down. 27—For that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What will he sleep in? And it will be that when he cries to Me, I will hear, for I am gracious.”
Finally, God gave this guaranteed blessing if they followed the guidelines and precepts that He outlined for them to follow. He said in Deuteronomy 15:10, 6 NLT 10—“Give generously to the poor, not grudgingly, for the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.”
6—“The Lord your God will bless you as he has promised. You will lend money to many nations but will never need to borrow. You will rule many nations, but they will not rule over you.”
Well, perhaps someone says the New Testament followed a different financial philosophy after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Did they? Here was the practice of the first Christian believers after Pentecost, Acts 4:32—35 NIV—32—“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. —33—With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all —34—that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales —35—and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.”
I will share a final passage from the lips of Jesus Christ. Matthew 25:34—40 MES 34—“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation. 35—And here’s why: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room, 36—I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37—“Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, 38—thirsty and give you a drink? 39—And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ 40—Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’
I will conclude with two quotes from a well known 19th century author.
“Those who hold the reins of Government are unable to solve the problem of poverty, pauperism, and increasing crime…If men would give more heed to the teachings of the word of God, they would find a solution for these problems that perplex them. Much might be learned from the Old Testament in regard to the labor question and the relief of the poor.” —MH 183
“God’s word sanctions no policy that will enrich one class by the oppression and suffering of another…He who would take advantage of another’s misfortunes in order to benefit himself, or who seeks to profit himself through another’s weakness or incompetence, is a transgressor both of the principles and precepts of the word of God.” —MH 187
As you read how the Bible describes the social and economic system that God designed for His people in the Old and New Testament, does it align with being a “social democrat,” as it is accurately defined. You be the judge.
Today, the world’s wealthiest 10% own 75% of all personal wealth and 53% of all income. On June 16, 2026, it was reported in the Economist, that the personal wealth of Elon Musk had reached $1 trillion dollars. So then, one human being on a planet of 8.3 billion people controls .2% of the wealth of the entire globe. And yet, our focus in America is on the political affiliation of someone that calls themselves a social democrat. Interesting, the things that control & command our attention….
